Very Easy to Use
2008-10-04
Bought this product after a lot of research online and in stores. Am extremely satisfied. It is very easy to use right from the getgo. The only negative as far as I'm concerned is the user booklet. I had to make a few calls to their technical department when I couldn't figure something out. They were helpful and didn't have any wait time. I think the booklet could have been more detailed in it's instructions. My son bought the exact same one after seeing ours. Love the spoken street names which cost more in other makes and models.

hi i bought this excellent peice of GPS after reading many reviews in Cnet and other related websites..after very careful reviewing i bought it from amazon for an amazing price and still the GPS is the excellent peice i have bought so far..my previous one being the magellan.. i am sure TOmTom will upgrade its website to have us all the updated maps as early as 2008..well it doesnt have the MP3 play back option in the unit .. i find many pros while 2 cons.. it doesnt support a SD card slot and its mem is 1gb..however it should have street spelling option instead of calling the turns..well its the price that makes it worth..

wish I could put some of the routes in that I would take first, before it comes up with the whole route to take. Also very hard to put street adresses in.
no problems found

I've had my TomTom for about a month and have not run into problems. I travel to unfamiliar areas a lot with a home party business and now feel confident that I will find my way where I need to go and home again. The voice speaker is plenty loud, directions are given clearly and in plenty of time. The unit picks up the satellite quickly on startup and calculates the trip well. On a recent trip 6 hours from home, I could easily find local banks & restaurants using the POIs. Money well spent.
Broken screens cannot be repaired!

I would like to give it no stars, I recommended a TomTom over a Nuvi to my Father. So he got his 330xl on Tuesday and broke the screen Wednesday trying to get the receiver into the new "improved" mount. I called and Dennis at TomTom told me "straight up" there is nothing we can do and they can't even fix it. That of course after trolling all my personal data. They offered me a discount on a new unit, thanks alot TomTom. I told them I would wait for the class action lawsuit.

Amazing for those with no sense of direction!

I'm one of those unfortunate souls who is lost once you turn me around once. I joke my internal compass always faces north (not magnetic north, mind you, just that no matter what direction I am facing my intuition suggests that's north). Needless to say, I am often lost. My friends love seeing where I'm taking them when I drive and have often bet one another on whether or not I will reach a destination I've been to a dozen times without making a wrong turn.
Now that I've gotten that confession out, onto the 330S XL.
I played with a few items in the store before I made the decision to buy this. I found that the TomTom was easy to use and incredibly intuitive. I looked at Garmin, and my only hesitancy was that when a zip code straddles two townships, it offers multiple choices based upon the larger townships and not the smaller, named community and zip, and this lead to some confusion.
As irony would have it, I recently started a job where I drive from office to office, so I was using Google Maps to plot out my travels. My problem with this was the first direction always starts with a direction to head in (NW, SE), and I am oblivious as to what direction I am facing, as mentioned previously. So I compared the two, the TomTom directions and the G-Maps directions, and they were identical. The difference: TomTom knew where I was when I didn't. I didn't have to pay attention, it was telling me when and where to turn.
The speaker was plenty loud. I know others have commented about it, but I actually had to lower mine because it kept startling me even with the radio on. I now keep it at 70% because I can hear it clearly but it's not so loud that it makes me jump.
The screen is loaded with information, and at first this is distracting. How far and how much time to the destination, the next turn, the current and next street names. After a few hours, I became aware of what everything was and could merely glance and know what was up.
The directions are very accurate - down to when to turn. Now, I wouldn't suggest this, but the directions are almost accurate enough to take blindfolded, meaning that when it says turn, you're usually right at the spot where you need to start your turn. I've seen in-car units where the accuracy isn't that succinct.
My only complaint is that it's not 100% simple to take in and out of the car - it attaches by suction to the windshield, and you either have to undo the suction or pop the TomTom from the mount. Now this foible is also what keeps it so tightly attached, so I can't really complain - I'd just rather see a different solution - it's the sort of device I don't want to leave in my car and would rather just take with me when I go into a store.
Overall, I like the thing and recommend it for ease of use, accuracy, and volume!

Perhaps a tad quiet at highway speeds but really useful and utterly reliable. A great companion on my recent trip across country and back. It twice redirected me when the interstate ahead was closed. The operation is straight forward and intuitive.
Good GPS

The TomTom XL 330 S is a good GPS. I have been using it for the last 2 months and have made the following conclusions.
Pros
It has pretty good maps which can be upgraded for a fee.
It calculates re-routes within 15-30 seconds depending.
It has a nice size touch screen at 4.3 in with Google-Like "Click and Drag" ability to scroll across maps.
POI(Points of Interest) and other customizeable features(Backgrounds, Color Schemes, Icons, Voices etc...) are upgradeable via internet or manually by yourself.
Routes and Maps can be user updated to reflect Roadwork and changes of Traffic patterns (ie. 2-way street becomes a 1-way)
Route options include a choice of Fastest Route to Walking Route which means you can use it somewhat to walk around a city.
Cons
The included computer voice which speaks the street names has a low volume even at its maximum setting. It's audible when the car is quiet but a highway speeds it is sometimes tough to discern what she is saying.
Re-routes are not the most logical(if you are familiar with the area-Common GPS problem)
Overall, this GPS is a good value. It is easy to use right out of the box and has enough features and upgradeability for the seasoned driver. If you don't need Bluetooth Cell Phone features or a built in MP3/Photo viewer, this definitely fits the bill. With software updates this product should keep growing.
I like it so far

I got this for the wife. She works weekends & goes from house to house in various neigborhoods ( professional clown). I can give her great directions & she still gets lost. She's used the Tom-Tom & loves it. Volume is fine. Ease of use is great ( she can't turn on a computer). I like the mounting & the quick re-routing aspects. I did notice that some directions did not initially pick the most direct route. Fortunately for our usage we traveled in the right direction & let the re-routing take over. No problems thus far. I did buy at Costco knowing I could always return it. I needed that safety net- I guess. I definately would recommend it
