A Truly Amazing Product
2008-07-05
This product really does let you remotely retrieve and delete files remotely over the Internet if your laptop is ever stolen.
I have had the opportunity to test it and it performed flawlessly and exactly as advertised.
After installing the software, I had a friend pretend to be a laptop thief. I told him to take my laptop anywhere he wanted for several hours.
I logged into the Laptop Cop user interface and created a remote file retrieval and deletion request which basically sat out on the Internet until my friend stopped at a coffee shop and used their wireless connection to check his email.
As soon as he did that, the software received the retrieval and deletion commands I had created earlier and silently and invisibly Laptop Cop retrieved the files I had requested and deleted the files I had told it to delete.
All of this happened right under the "thief's" nose and he had no idea.
I then was able to turn on the monitoring functions of the software and it allowed me to see everything he was doing. It was freaky - I could see every website he visited, all of the emails he sent or read, which programs he was using - in short, everything he did on my laptop in. It was truly spectacular because it was happening in real time.
The company also has a laptop recovery service which I was unable to use since my laptop wasn't really stolen so I can't comment on how well that works. I imagine getting the laptop back wouldn't be too hard because of the amount of information the product records on the thief's computer activity. It's not just one of those simple IP address-based products that basically just pings out the IP address where the laptop used to be.
To me, the ability to get my files back remotely or to delete sensitive info really is the key, as the information on my laptop is MUCH more important to me than the price of the laptop itself.
I work in security software and this is the first product I've seen in a long while that was actually fun to use and really got my heart racing with what it allowed me to do.
