Generally, research has found that:
  • Good spellers have many strategies they use to help them learn to spell.
  • Children who self correct by reading over their work learn a great deal about spelling.
  • Good spellers search for ways in which language works and move from approximations to conventional spelling in much the same way as they learn to talk
  • Reading helps children learn to spell.
  • Memorising and learning to spell are two different processes.

From the book Parents, Teachers, Partners by Barry Dwyer.
