Spelling Strategies - Common Letter Combinations - CLICKS (cont)
How do I use this with my
child?
You want to encourage your child to look
into words and find common letter combinations. With their list of words from school, sit
down and CLICK some words together.
- Have the list of words in front of you, written in clear,
bold writing.
- With a different pen or marker, CLICK the words by
highlighting all the letters that often go together. Like this:
| CLICKS |
| ST AND |
TRAIN |
| BOAT |
HURRY |
| PLANE |
MEET |
The coloured letters represent some of the common letter
combinations that we see in the English language, and each language has their own common
letter combinations.
Alternatives
If you are looking for a variation to this,
extend it to other written mediums. CLICK posters, signs, newspaper articles, story books,
labels on jars, shopping lists. You can have competitions about who can get the most
CLICKS in 5 minutes. You can do it in the car, waiting at the bus station, on a train
looking at the advertisements (or graffiti, I suppose). Anywhere where writing appears.
