this worksheet
When they come to you with an attempted
word:
Praise their effort and tick the correct letters, even if they arent in the correct
order, to build confidence.
Talk about the word and
the letters in it "Hmm, how
did you know that it started with a W?" Get them thinking about how they
came to use the letters they did did they remember it from somewhere or did they
sound it out phonetically.
Always talk in the
positive "Well you
got these letters right, which is really great now you need to find the other
letters."
Write the correct
spelling in the appropriate column
Write the word in full if you are using two columns. If a second attempt is
required, write down the correct letters and leave gaps for the child to see if they can
fill in the remaining letters. When they have completed this step, tick the correct
letters again, talk again about how they came to their conclusions and then write the
correct version in the last column.
What ifs:
What if my
child says "But I cant
"
Dont give in. You can say things like "Have a go with the letters you
know" or "Just try the first few letters and I will help you with the
rest.." The aim is to build confidence in risk-taking.
What if they
come asking how to spell every word?
Emphasise that the words
don't have to be spelt right the first time and that they can 'have a go' in their story
too. In this instance you might specify to use the have a go sheet every fourth or fifth
word.
What if they
get the word right the first time?
That's great and you should
let them know it. Give a great big tick or smiley next to the correct word and use lots of
smiles and praise. |
