Special Needs Corner - Special Kids of Segamat, Malaysia Page 7

The time came to say goodbye. In the short amount of time I had with them, I made some terrific friends whom I hope to visit again next year (1998).

Faizah not sharing her toys   Teaching children who have communication impairments is always a challenge, even for teachers who are trained. This little girl is attending school for the first time in her life and the teachers first task is to teach her to share with the other children. It was fantastic to see her playing with one other student whom she had chosen as a friend and with who she would willingly share her toys. It will be interesting to see her progress during the next visit.
Last day with the special kids of Segamat, Malaysia   On my last day, I dropped by to wish them well and say goodbye, with a few parting words on behaviour management and a promise to visit again in the future. What I learned was that basically kids with disabilities all over the world are very accepting - it doesn't matter what you look like. If you open your heart to them, they will respond in kind. Of course the other thing that came home to me was how lucky we really are to be living in a developed country, and to have schools and resources that cater for the very special needs of these kids. When I left, they said very hearty 'thankyous' for my time and helping them - but they helped me learn lots of things too and I am better for the experience.
