Lots of kids have a problem motivating
themselves to learn and this is where something like Pokemon can actually help. You can
use the phenomenon of Pokemon to teach your child everything from spelling to number
skills.
For instance, did you know that a child
can:
- Increase their spelling vocabulary
by 432 words if they learn to spell all the techniques, elements and types of
Pokemon. These are general words which can be used in other contexts later.
- Develop their knowledge of letter
blends by sorting the words according to word
families.
- Learn the alphabet by
sorting the Pokemon names into alphabetical order.
- Develop their problem solving
skills by playing word games using words derived from the Pokemon World.
Develop analytical and maths
skills: With our new Pokemon Database (PokeData),
children can be encouraged to use their analytical and math skills by
looking at the data and comparing the Pokemon. For instance, you can focus on skills
like:
- Learning how to average numbers
eg What is the average weight of the five heaviest or five lightest Pokemon?
- Multiplication and division
by making up problems to solve using the height and weight of the Pokemon
- Subtraction by finding
the difference between the height and weight of the Pokemon. eg What's the difference
between the tallest Pokemon and the shortest Pokemon?
- Addition by posing
problems that require children to add up the height and weight of Pokemon. eg How many
Pikachu's would you need to be the same weight as an Arbok?
These and lots of other questions like
these require children to look at the data not just for interest but for learning too. It
is then that they are interested in solving the problems and gaining the skills because
they enjoy the content.
- Be on the lookout for our Pokemon
worksheets which we'll post up for parents and teachers to use. They will focus on a range
of learning areas.
