Spelling Strategy - 'Have a go'

The child has a go at spelling a word first then comes to you for advice on whether it is correct.

What to do:

1.  Make up a 'Have a go' sheet (or you can print ours) and keep it handy – the best ideas are no good if they are not implemented.

2.  The next time your child asks "How do you spell...? resist the temptation to automatically spell the word for your child. Give them the ‘Have a go’ sheet instead and say "You try it first and then come to me..."

3.  If your child hasn’t yet developed a confident approach to spelling, use two columns first (give the 2nd try a miss). This helps them gain some confidence first and gives them a chance to see how words are spelt. If they are fairly confident, use all three columns.
