Spelling Strategy - Look Cover Write
Check
This is a methodical way to learn a list
of words. It reinforces the visual aspect of spelling and gets students
taking notice of the flow of letters.
What to do?
Firstly, set up a worksheet that
looks like this:
Print this worksheet
- Write the list of words in the Look
column.
- Look
at the word, Say the
letters and remember how it looks.
- Cover
the words by folding the Look column, over
to the Cover column - now you can only see the Write and Check columns.
- Write
the word down in the Write column.
- Check
which letters were correct, by looking at
the original word and writing them in the Check column and leaving gaps
for the letters you missed.
- In a different colour, add in the
letters that were missing.
- Repeat steps 1 - 6 for the next word,
until the list is complete. Focus on one word at a time.
- It might look like this:

HINT: In the list of words, make
sure there are words of varying difficulty to provide a challenge, yet
protect their confidence.
Variations:
Watch the television during and
advertisement and write down any remembered words (like brand names and
slogans) - check them the next time the ad comes on.
This strategy can be made into a game by
simply saying "You choose two for me and I'll choose two for you." Monitor
the enjoyment level and know when to stop.
What if's:
What if
they think the activity is boring?
Try using a tangible reward
that will motivate them to at least give the activity a try. Reward their
success too and remember, success itself is a great motivator. If they
really don't respond to this activity, then try another of our activities. |
