Spelling Strategy - Words that Rhyme

Finding words that rhyme can be a really great way to manipulate or play with word. Start with words that look similar (car, far) and then progress to words that only sound the same.

This activity encourages children to recognise visual patterns in words and to process the words when they look for similar sounds.

What to do?

  1. Start with a list of words and another list of words that visually match the words on the current list.
  2. The child writes the words beside its match and then check the accuracy of the spelling.
  3. Provide less and less matching words so that the child has to provide some. It's OK for them to come up with words that sound the same, but point out the difference in the spelling .
  4. Eventually progress to starting with a list of their own words and thinking of words that match visually and / or aurally (same sound)
  5. This is an example:

sneeze freeze crack
track crack floor
cut nut push
