Setting: Students have clay.  This may have been formed into a regular shape ie block, by the instructor.

Sequence:

clay28.JPG (9630 bytes) 1.  Pattern the clay on all sides.  Clay can be dug into, holes formed, patterns created etc.  Care needs to be taen to ensure no air is trapped in clay.

2.  Clay can be mounted on clay base.  Flatten and cut base with clay slicer.

3.  Leave clay to dry for at least 10 days.  Glaze and fire if necessary.

NOTE: Block sculpture can be a useful way to use up left over pieces of clay whihc have trapped air and which therefore cannot be fired.  The sculptures still look good unfired.  When dry, try painting with an oil based paint / enamel.
