Brush Painting with Dye A very effective painting method is brush painting with dye (including food dye) onto white cloth. The watery dyes, applied to a cloth surface such as cotton (i.e. sheets), are readily absorbed into the cloth. Colour strength and brightness can be determined by adding water but generally strong and bright colours are best, particularly yellow and red. Greens and blues are also very effective. Cloth can be laid on newspaper which absorbs the excess dyes. The colours often overlap and primary colours mix to create new colours. The size of the cloth can be varied. Larger is generally better. Large mural paintings can be painted and mounted if large cloth sheets are available. Cloth placed on an easel lets the dye run down the cloth and blend with the other colours. Brush painting with dye is an excellent class activity and the effects are particularly striking and easy to achieve. Some examples of work created using brush painting with dye. |
