Activity 1 - Introducing Clay

Rationale: This activity is designed to introduce the texture and pliability of clay. Students experience different ways of changing the shape of clay and ways in which the clay can be patterned with the fingers.

Materials: Clay, board, cloth

Setting: Students have materials in front of them, including just enough clay to fit into the palm of their hand.

Sequence: The student has the clay in their hand to do the following:

1. Squeeze clay in hand.

2. Flatten clay by hitting the clay with the palm of the other hand.

3. Poke holes in the flattened clay with the fingers.

4. Flatten clay again with the palm of the hand.

5. Draw lines in the clay with fingers and finger nails.

6. Squeeze the clay again to make a shape in the hand.

7. Roll the clay between the hands to make a worm.

8. Squeeze it again to make a shape in the hand.

9. Put the clay on the table.

10. Hit it with the palm of the hand to make it flat.

11. Poke holes in the flattened clay.

12. Flatten and smooth clay.

13. Draw lines in the clay.

14. Pick up clay and squeeze to make a shape in the hand. Try to make a ball shape.

15. Take the clay home.
