Activity
4 - Tile Cutting and Patterning
with Fingers Rationale: This activity is designed to introduce the manipulation of clay with tools
and involves decorating it with free patterns.
Materials: Clay, board, cloth, rolling pin, tile cutters.
 |
Note:
Tile cutters are relatively cheap, available from most school art suppliers and
easy to use. |
Setting: Students have materials in
front of them. Clay may be prepared by the instructor and then rolled into a rough ball
shape approximately the size of a tennis ball.
Sequence:
- Flatten the clay with the palm of an open
hand, to approximately finger thickness.
- Clay may be rolled with a rolling pin
(optional).
- Student independently or co-actively creates
patterns in the clay using their fingers. Allow as much independence as possible.
- Place the tile cutter on the clay slab where
there are distinctive patterns. Assist student to push down the tile cutter so that it
cuts through the clay.
- Remove the tile from the tile cutter.
- Leave to dry for 10 days, before firing in
the kiln.
- Paint on the glaze, then glaze fire.
- The completed piece can then be mounted on
wood backing and hung.
