Title: The Feis
Have you heard of the feis? Pronounced
fesh for those of you not Irish.
The feis in Ballina comes once a year normally in march or late febuary. Its a few weeks of compititions for children any kind: Singing,poems,reading,piano,tin whistle and more. Everyone is talking about it its a great event for all children.
The atmosphere at the feis is brilliant,
you go in and watch others compete as you wait, then you get your number which is pinned onto your front or if it is the piano feis your back. The prying eye of the judge watches the candidate's every move. She stops now and then to write down comments or to take or deduct marks. There is a differerent judge every year. Some nice and some not so nice.
Its only one person's opinion so it doesn't
matter if you dont get a medal or a trophy.
Its the fun of it that matters. The crowd claps after each person's performance even if they're bad. A voice comes out over the micrafone 'could we have quiet in the hall please' The noise stops. A girl begans to sing 'My young love said to me my mother wont mind And my father wont slight you for your lack of kind......(and old Irish song) About ten others go through the same process some faltering, some not. After the final song the compeditors for the next compitition are called up and they line up along the side wall. The ones who have sung watch as the judge sorts the comment sheets into two piles the smaller pile are the ones who've got prizes. The nerves are killing them. She speaks up 'It was a hard decision as they were all so good' she says 'and I would like to say well done to all who entered but all of you cant win...........she rambles on for a min. and then stops. 4th prize goes to... no. 27 the crowd claps. The girl gets her medal. A tie for 3rd place between... nos. 15 and11 more clapping.
2nd place goes to... no. 22 clapping again.
And 1st prize goes to...no. 10 more and more clapping follows. They line up and their names are called out then the ones who didn't win get their comment sheets.The nxt. compitition lines up.The facts: this story may be boring but the feis is good, The are also highly commended medals for some who the judge thinks are good but not good enough for a place,
Its much much more exciting being there so........ SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!
