Monday
Help!
This is driving me around the bend
Of Bonnet Hill…
I can't think…
concentrate…
work…
I don't know
What these numbers and letters mean
E=mc2
a + b = c
1 + 1 = 3
THREE?
My mind is not working!
It has gone on strike.
The working-class brain cells
Demand a pay rise -
And more sleep.
Why must there be
Maths on a Monday?
Why must it be
That all the horrible,
Loathsome subjects
Plant themselves
In Monday's garden?
Among all the tulips,
sunflowers,
daffodils -
The GOOD subjects of the week?
I just want
To float away
On Cloud Nine,
To think my own thoughts
Without being rudely interrupted
By a maths question -
Poking me in the ribs -
Demanding an answer.
I just want to relax,
To let my head
Roll off my shoulders.
There it goes…
Like a rubber ball…
tumbling . . .
bouncing . . .
rolling . . .
Down the narrow corridor
Past other sufferers
Caught in early morning work.
But I shall let it roll,
down the stairs,
down the hill,
onto the road…
There it shall wait
Among other bodiless heads,
Among exhaust fumes and city garbage,
Until it can hitchhike home
To the comfort
Of a soft pillow.
But more maths problems
Will be knocking on the door,
Demanding to be let in.
But I won't open the door . . .
Not until tomorrow.
By tomorrow,
I shall have rounded the bend
Of Bonnet Hill,
With my head reattached
And the killer fatigue
Will have worn off -
A fatigue
That strikes
Everyone,
Everywhere -
Especially on a Monday morning.
