Title: Mary

This is something i wrote for a close friend of my when she died. she was 70 and died of cancer.

I’ll never forget you Mary.
For the fraction of time that I knew you.
I trusted and admired you.
You had such humour and courage.
I often used to think that if you had been Daniel in the lion’s den,
You would have made the lions laugh.
Made friends with them.

I loved coming round your house,
Singing in your lounge,
Cartwheeling round your garden.
Swapping stories, gifts and struggles.
Talking in French as we said goodbye,
Ringing the ship bell that hung by your door.
I feel so privileged to have known you.
You were a great role model.
Smiling right up to the end.
It’s a shame we got torn apart by the unavoidable.
You were so brave and strong.
I’m sorry that I wasn’t.
When the going got tough,
I struggled to cope.
Seeing you so ill broke my heart.
You were in such pain.
You hated me seeing you like that.
Your dignity was fading.
When I saw you with that oxygen tank,
Still wearing your nightdress in the afternoon,
Your legs swollen and bruised,
I wanted to cry.
Yet you were still smiling.
How far did that smile go?
Not to your twinkling eyes.
Was I that naïve not to see the pain and agony you endured?
Or did I choose not to believe it was happening.

When hedges went missing,
It was you whom I turned to, to cry.
Then when he turned up, (the same day)
I told you first.
He loved you so much.
He was always at your house.
That was another thing we had in common,
Our love for animals.
Margaret gave me some left over chicken, from your funeral to give hedges.
So he said goodbye to you in style!
When you gave me that celebratory drink,
Did you know it was the last time?
The last time we’d say “au-reviour”.
The last time I’d ring that bell.
Maybe you did know.
Was that the real reason for the drink?
It was the last time I saw you,
But not the last time we spoke.
I had to phone you up twice to tell you your ambulance was here.
You had forgotten what time it was coming to pick you up!
I never saw you or spoke to you again.
You always loved travelling.
We’d spend hours pouring over your latest pictures of the “Taj Mahal”.
I still have the Indian doll you gave me and the brass camel from Egypt.
Now you have completed the ultimate journey.
I’m proud to be able to say that I knew you.
I will never forget you,
Mary my friend.
