Title: the best short story
One of the best short stories I’ve ever read was “your shoes” by Michele Roberts. It’s a really tragic story about a mother who is distraught because her 15yr old daughter has run away from home. As part of my English coursework, I had to write something from the daughter’s point of view. So, this is what I wrote!
I wish I was back home with you.
Why am I so defiant?
The argument was really small,
Yet turned into a giant.
I really wish I could blame you,
And say, “look what you’ve done”,
But I can’t `cos I know it’s my fault,
And because I love you mum.
You should have realised times have changed.
You just were too old fashioned.
You wrapped me up in cotton wool,
And always took the blame.
I said things I shouldn’t have.
I always seemed to swear.
You never told me off though,
You didn’t seem to care.
Do you ever think of me?
And what I’m doing now?
Do you hate me for what I’ve put you through?
And think that I’m a cow?
I know dad lost his temper,
And I’d say quite rightly too.
I just wish we’d done things differently,
And just said, “I love you”.
So now I’m on my own,
All through a stupid row.
It’s my entire fault I know.
But mum I need you now.
I wish I could come back.
And we could start afresh.
I’d really like to change my ways,
I’d really do my best.
I know I made things hard,
As older and older I got.
But if you believe nothing other.
Believe that I love you a lot.
So, how are you getting on?
I’m sure you’re doing great.
I’ll always grieve what I gave up,
The chance to be your mate.
