Title: The Girl I Changed
She was a girl with more than her share of self confidence. I could tell that right away. With the start of a new school year and the beginning of seventh grade, I scrutinized all my new classmates, all but three of whom I had never seen before in her life. This girl was one of the few I'd met before, though I
had no memory of it. We had gone to preschool together. Her name was Sophie, which made me think of soft fluffy clouds and little bunny rabbits, though her personality spoke of royal ignorance. She had gone to a tiny, private Jewish school where she had been sheltered much more than I at a large public school. Now we had met in middle school once again.
With the beginning of the new year came the homecoming football game and dance, which meant each grade had to chose two 'princesses' and 'princes', even though the seventh grade knew almost nothing about each other. Sophie was chosen more for lack of anyone else. Even though we would find out later in the year that much of the grade was self confident, she was the only one who showed it imediately, not at all shy.
As the year progressed, our class found out more and more about one another. And something people figured out pretty early on was that Sophie cared too much about her own well-being. Unfortunaetly, she didn't seem to even realize this about herself. She literally thought she was a charitable, caring person. Then suddenly Sophie was forced to wake up and see that
the same kids who had happily elected her princess now thought her a, well, spoiled brat. Rumors flew around that had the class seen Sophie's true side back in September, she would never have chosen her to be princess.
I hate to see people picked on, so I tried ot stand by her. However, inside, I felt the same way about Sophie as my peers. I finally figured out that Sophie was going ot have to deal with the problem on her own, for with even one person, me, still her friend, she thought the world adored her. I knew she had to learn that if she wanted people to like her, Sophie had to get over her self-centered ways. So I began slowly to spend less time with Sophie and more with my other friends. And slowly, Sophie began to become nicer. Though she certainly has a lot more to do before kids stop thinking of her as selfish, Sophie is well on her way. It feels good to know I helped her so much.
