The next day Shalini was free, as it was a holiday. She had planned to visit her friend Roshni. “I am going ma, I’ll be back in the evening.” Mrs. Kapoor noticed that Shalini still sounded sullen. But Mrs. Kapoor didn’t groan or sigh, instead she smiled slowly and went towards the phone as soon as Shalini went out of the house. She slowly dialed her mothers phone number in Jammu….

Shalini was thinking of her grandmother’s arrival after a week as she peddled hard. She considered the fact that soon her room would be having an extra member who really had no business to be there. This was totally unfair of ma, she thought with tears in her eyes. Afterall she had seen roshni’s grandmother. That lady hardly let Roshni live in peace. She was forever breathing down her neck, telling her to be more lady like, play less and pray more, etc. etc. etc. Shalini knew in her heart that her grandmother would also be like her. And then sharing a room with a person like that was too much…
