Title: The Perfect Grandma Part I
“Grandma’s coming and that’s final Shalu. Do you hear me?” ma said firmly. Her face showed surpressed anger. Shalini let out a defeated sign. “Yes ma, I hear you. But you don’t understand. She is old and probably she will be exactly like all old women are. Old fashioned, senile and maybe worse, she could be embarrassing. And then…” Shalini’s voice broke at the last words and she ran out of the room. Her mother sat down heavily on the sofa and let out a groan.
A week ago, Shalini’s mother had informed her 10 years old daughter about her maternal grandmother’s arrival. Shalini’s reaction had been far from happy. Then when told that she would be sharing her room with grandma, Shalini had blown up. “You can’t do that to me ma! She’s old, I don’t know her and she is going to share my room? You are literally ruining my life! You keep her in you room but I wont have her in mine. I just won’t!” Her mother had been taken aback by this outburst but she thought it would pass. Instead Shalini’s hatred had grown.
Now there was only a week left for her grandma’s arrival and Shalini was still defiant. And there was no way Shalini’s mother would abandon her mother and let her live in Jammu. It was a dangerous place and grandma lived all alone. “No! I can’t stop her from coming. There has to be a way to convince Shalini. Afterall Shalini had not even seen her grandma. She wasn’t old fashioned or embarrassing and definitely not senile. Infact she was exactly like Shalini. Modern and confident. She would really be fun if Shalini just stopped being so difficult.”
Soon she had a plan…
