Title: The Real Friend Part III
I settled down in school quite fast and made some friends. But none of them were like Archana. I found out that she really was very popular and seemed to have a million friends. Many a times I tried to catch her attention. Sometimes by making wise cracks about teachers and students and sometimes by breaking rules. Archana and her friends seemed to be very carefree and hardly followed any rules. They were always getting in and out of trouble. This made me a little uncomfortable as I had never before purposely broken rules. Despite that, I followed Archana like a faithful puppy. I never seemed to notice that Archana was continuously laughing at me behind my back. I did her homework and mending for her, sometimes owned up for the mistakes she had made and even let her copy off my test papers! All this while I had been ignoring my study and work. Instead of copying the notes in my notebook, I was copying them in Archana’s. My grades slipped down and I still did not get the time to complete my pending work.
Then, I got some helping hand. The hand was the same one, which had helped me unpack my luggage the first day. Resham started copying my notes for me and helped me prepare for the class tests. I did not pay attention to all this and hardly said a word to her. Still she was always there when I needed help and seemed to overlook my coldness. It was not that I did not like her, but she just did not seem to interest me at all. But slowly I got adjusted to seeing her standing near the lockers in the morning. She always waited for me there in the beginning of the classes and kept on a lively chatter as we walked towards the class. This became a daily routine. I hardly contributed to the conversation she made but she did not seem to mind at all. Sometimes she even helped me do Archana’s work, which showed that she was not the jealous type. All this seemed to help me a lot but I was too proud to admit it.
