Title: The Real Friend Part IIII

I was still running after Archana when Resham fell ill. She got jaundice and was sent home for three months. It was then when her absence slowly started bothering me. I had so gotten used to seeing the pale face waiting with a smile near my locker that I could not believe she was gone. I had started depending on her without realizing it. Or maybe I had realized it but never really bothered to appreciate all the help she gave me. I had aced every test after Resham had started helping me. Now, I realized that she had made me catch up on the studies and I was no longer lagging behind. She had also helped me revise by asking me questions before the tests and never made me feel as if I was a new girl.
I was also starting to miss her lively conversations. As I was thinking all this, Archana and her friends came up laughing and chatting. This time they looked at me and sniggered again. It hit me like tons of rock. They weren’t being nice; they were taunting me for following them like a faithful puppy. I realized that I deserved the taunting. I had been so ignorant and foolish. All this while I was looking for a friend when the only real friend I could ever get was standing in front of me. Resham had been the best friend I had ever had and I had never noticed her! And now she was so ill! I ran to the principle’s office and asked her about Resham.
“Are you her friend, Sandhya?” she asked, looking skeptical.
“Yes ma’am. I am her best friend.” I replied, looking confident.
“Oh well, OK. I’ll tell you the truth. She is not in a good state. She was already weak and now she is even weaker. I think she maybe joining school very late now that her parents are taking her abroad for proper medical attention.” She said gravely.
I realized I had been holding my breath all this while. I could not believe it. Resham’s condition had become worse! I decided to write to her everyday and say sorry for the way I had been. I knew she would forgive me. With tears welling up in my eyes, I returned to the dormitory.

It has been two months since Resham left for home. I write to her everyday without fail and give her all the little details of what’s happening in the school. She hardly writes back but I know she is slowly improving. I think the prayers I say every night are helping. I cannot wait for Resham to come back. This time she won’t need to stand near the lockers and wait for me. I would already be there, waiting for her!
