Title: Diet or Die: Part 2
Tarren sat in the corner of his cell, chewing on his thumbnail. His normally long, silky, blonde hair was soiled and tangled. His coarse clothing was in tatters. Images of his life flashed before him. He could not bring himself to think of his execution. He knew what he did was wrong, but he felt that he had had little control over the matter and should not receive such harsh punishment. To make matters worse the main guard hated him and treated him like he was a troll, going out of his way to make Tarren’s remaining life the worst possible.
Each day seemed to last a year. Tarren was so miserable he wished he were already dead. One morning, an argument started outside his cell. Tarren wondered whether it was the day of his execution. But as he listened he realized that this was not at all the case.
“He can’t leave the cell! It’s only been four days!” the guard was shouting. Another voice replied, calm and sophisticated. “If you don’t unlock the door right now, I will personally feed you to the beasts. The whole elven community is at risk. Let me in.”
Tarren heard a key turn in the lock and the door swung open. A handsome young elf strode purposely in and began talking. “I am here by order of the Head Elf. Yesterday three male dragons moved into the area. One bystander claims that they were colossal and were walking toward the Cyrammi Cliffs.”
“Walking!” Tarren exclaimed. “Dragons don’t walk, they fly!”
Ignoring the interruption, the elf went on. “Elves are panicking and the town has gone to shreds. We cannot spare a good elven citizen, so the Head Elf has decided that you may go and try to free us from these beasts. Plus, based on your path, you seem to have a knack with beasts. So, let’s put it to the test. We will not aid you in any way. Don’t return until you have personally seen the dragons out of our lands. If you manage to make the dragons leave, we will spare your life. If not, we will kill you without a second thought. It is your choice. Stay and face execution, or make the dragons leave and spare your life. What say you?”
Tarren had no real choice. “I will make the dragons leave, and I will restore honor to my name.” With that, the young elf nodded “Well, good luck. But either way, it appears you are doomed. I bid you farewell,” and he walked briskly out of the cell. The guard looked in at Tarren. “Lucky, aren’t you?” he said gleefully. “The dragons will kill you, and I’ll never have to look at your ugly face again!”
