Title: Climbing the rigging
To prove I was a true sailor,
I had to complete a task.
To climb the rigging and back down again,
That's a simple task!
My nerves began to fail,
When I climbed up the sail.
My stomach lurched my heart pounded,
And I knew I was going to fail.
The sea, slate grey and ever rolling,
The lank grey white clouds.
Gave me terrified thoughts,
Now I knew I was going to fail.
The mere thoughts made my hands grow damp,
Made my head swam.
I felt sicker yet,
But the wind made me a bit calm.
My head felt light, my heart on a anvil,
I had to keep going.
It was so quite,
I could even hear the ship moaning.
Climbing the rigging,
It seemed forever.
I thought I was never going to reach the top,
NEVER! NEVER! NEVER!
Even not moving myself,
I flying in the air like wild
The horizon kept shifting, tilting, dropping,
I was dizzy, nauseous, terrified.
At last I reached the top,
I was so glad I could dance and hop.
But the task wasn't finished,
I had to get back down.
Each groping step downwards was a nightmare,
Most of the time my foot found only air.
Down the longest stretch,
It was there I fell.
I screamed my head downwards,
I grabbed for a dangling rope.
Untangled myself,
I was free.
But how I wept,
My entire body shaking.
I continued down,
I edged myself past the lowest sails.
Oh how my heart swelled with exhalation,
Finally I reached the bottom.
The crew gave out a "huzzah"
I jumped down and I was proud of myself.
