Title: Runaway - 1

I sat close by the phone, waiting for her call. 'When will you call?' I murmured under my breath. Suddenly the phone rang and I immediately picked up the receiver.
'Hello? Mom?' I answered.
'Yes dear this is Mom.' She didn't sound too happy.
'W-what happened? Is Grandma ok?'
There was a long pause. I could hear Mom sigh, then take a deep breath. Just by the way Mom sounded, I knew it wasn't anything good.
'She is...well she's...'
'What happened?' I repeated. A lump started to rise in my throat, and it seemed to block my breathing.
'She's gone.'
The words hit me like a brick. I could hear mom lightly sobbing. Oh, how I wish I could have gone with her to Chicago. It would have meant a lot if I could've seen Grandma before her passing.
'That's, that's awful.' I choked out, tears bubbling up in my eyes.
'Dear, you will only have to stay by yourself for five more days or so. Her funeral will be in two days. Take care till then.'
'I will, Mom.'
'Goodbye, Sweetie. I love you.'
'I love you too. Bye.'
I waited until my mom to hang up until I hung up. Waves of sorrow kept flowing through my body, and I felt like crying until I couldn't anymore.
It had been three years since I had seen my grandmother. I still remember her wonderful fudge cookies. At the time, I was ten. Now I'm a teenager. The same as always. Very few friends, but it didn't bug me.
I couldn't wait until Mom got home. It was starting to get lonely here. The only thing I was able to was read a book. Though that was entertainment to me, I wish I could do something else.
All of my friends were off somewhere on vacation. The reason I couldn't go with my mom was because we didn't have enough money for two plane tickets.
So it was staying home for me. Maybe if we were still a family I wouldn't be alone. I probably could have gone to Chicago. But my parents got a divorce, and my sister and brother wanted to live with Dad.
Mom never saw a man since. I doubt she ever will. My mom is the only worker in the house, so it's very rough for her; having to pay all the bills, buy all of the food, clothing, and such.
That's why Mom can't wait until I get a job in two years. I pull out a book, sit on the sofa, and start reading.
