Title: Mongol Livestock Report
Hello! I’m Melissa Lambert, and today I’m going to tell you about Mongol livestock! Livestock is called tavun hushuu mal in the Mongol language. Due to their nomadic lifestyle, Mongols needed animals for food, transportation, clothing and shelter. Let me tell you about Mongol livestock.
The first kind of Mongol livestock I’m going to tell you about is the horse. The Mongol name for the horse is mori or aduu. The major transportation of the Mongols, horses had been used to conquer half the world! It is very, very rare that the Mongols kill a horse, so they’re not used to eating horsemeat and using the horse skin for stuff; but the mane and tail hair is good for making stuff like ropes and bags. With a powerful neck, kind of thick legs, a dense coat of fur, fiery spirit, endurance and steadiness, the horse's a symbol of the Mongol nation!
The second kind that I'm going to tell you about is the sheep. The Mongol name for sheep is khoni. Mutton is very popular among the Mongols, and it’s said that the most delicious mutton is the mutton of SoomInid of Inner Mongolia and the Gobi regions of Outer Mongolia. The original Mongolian sheep has a straight and coarse hair, good for rough weather. The Mongols use sheepskin for coats and shoes; wool for felt, carpets and clothes; and sheep milk for sour cream and cheese.
Now the ox. The Mongols call an ox ukher. The milk is very good for tea with milk, cream and cheese. The Mongols also enjoy beef. The skin of oxen is always used to make good leather. An ox is the only good livestock for pulling a Mongolian cart, a wooden cart with 2 large wooden wheels. It is very slow, but still the Mongols enjoy it. Most of the time, only 1 ox pulls the cart, but 80 white oxen pulled Genghis Kahn’s royal cart! The ox is the symbol of sturdiness. A yak is considered a kind of ox and is used in the cold places in Mongolia.
Well, I hope you learned a lot about Mongol livestock! I liked teaching you about horses, sheep and oxen! I hope you enjoyed learning too! I hope this was good! Bye!
