A Roman Siege By: tobias huoston
The Caesar came to a halt from a slow trot, on his gold decorated horse. He, in comparison to the soldiers, was blood free, well washed, and dressed in a purple tunic with soft leather boots. His skin looked to be as fair as the sky and his hair as black as the night.
“Arise,” he stated with authority.
The men rose and yelled, “ All hail Caesar!”
Then Commodus looked around at the entire silent crowd staring at him. “I have come to this palace district not only to escape the plague in Greece, but to clean up these slums and make you all useful,” he announced reluctantly. “I will make most of you men into my royal army.”
Then a beggar stepped out of the crowd of people. He was a stronger built man wearing rags and small cloth slippers. He was very dirty and foul looking.
Out of nowhere, he yelled back at Commodus, “Of course you will! You only have control over the army, oh and one other…”
“Silence now! You poor filth or you will pay the price for standing out against me!” Commodus threatened. He hated being contradicted and nonetheless by a beggar.
“…Thing the army is not yours. It is Rome’s! You are powerless!” finished the beggar like he had never even been interrupted.
The rest of the beggars and store owners began to yell encouragement to the speaker with “Here, here!” and “Yes, you tell em’!”
The commoners and beggars began to break out in rage. The ones wanting the Caesar to no longer be powerless began to fight and the scene became violent.
Then Commodus looked at a soldier to his right and said over the noise, “Dreike, grab that beggar who doubted me, immediately!”
The soldier was Joseph Porsosus Dreike. He was a member of the Roman army as a lieutenant of the white plates. He really did not agree with the Caesar and liked the senate as the governing tool much more. Nevertheless, he nodded to Commodus and went into the crowd. He drew his sword and commanded the people to make order and clear his way.
“Out of my way,” he demanded, “don’t make me force you!”
He found the foul man in minutes. The man put up his hands and went to punch Joseph in the face, where armor did not protect, with a solid right hook. Dreike simply ducked and the man whiffed the air violently.
“Don’t make me kill you, foolish beggar!”. This beggar was going no were. To be continued…
