Sounder is a coon dog that gets shot and loses an eye and an ear. The deputy shot the dog because he broke free from the boy. The only reason a man living in the big house was at the boy’s house because the father had stolen ham bone and sausage from a hacksaw owned the man. The man decided to bring the deputy with him to arrest the boy’s father. Although the father took the meat from the man, he did take it for a perfectly good reason. Then the mother took the left over meat back the big house. The mother also learned that the father has been working in a field somewhere. I would rate this book as a number
