Armstrong Sounder 116 pages.


Sounder is one of the best books of all time. It is about a poor black family that lives in the south in the early 1930s. The main character is a boy. He has a dog named Sounder, a father, a mother, and three brothers and sisters. The father works as a sharecropper for a rich white family.

One night, the boy notices the mother is humming. That means she is worried. Later the boy finds out it was because his father was stealing hambone and pork sausage. His father gets arrested one night, when a sheriff and his two deputies come to the cabin. As they take the father away, Sounder tries to save him. The sheriff pulls out his shotgun and shoots the dog. Sounder then waddles away and disappears for weeks and the boy takes a long journey to find his father.

To find out how the book ends, read it yourself. It was very exciting and sad. I recommend you get it as soon as you can. I am sure you will enjoy it.
