Avi The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle
226 pp.
In The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, Charlotte is the main character. She has brown hair and she was well brought up. Her father was very wealthy and he brought Charlotte up to respect the people around her that are also wealthy. She was also taught not to even speak to people below her class. But in this story she finds herself surrounded by scraggly, poor sailors who were impossible to avoid. Captain Jaggery was the only gentleman on the ship.
The story takes place upon a ship called the Seahawk which is an evil looking place. Charlotte knew that something might not be quite right when the two people who were carrying Charlotte’s trunk dropped the trunk and ran as soon as they saw the ship or heard Captain Jaggery’s name. And when the other two families that she was supposed to be sailing with didn’t come she knew that something wasn’t right about the ugly, nasty ship that she was about to board. The ship had a figurehead that was of a carved sea hawk. Its mouth was open and it looked as though it were screaming. When she was led down to her cabin by one of the sailors she was disgusted to see that a cockroach was crawling across her bed. Then the sailor said that the ship was full of them and that every ship has them. Then there was another knock at the door; it was Zachariah. And soon she wished that she hadn’t opened the door at all. Because Zachariah told her an awful story that happened on the same ship that she is sailing on and under the same captain. What will happen to Charlotte, read the book and find out.
