Title: Animal Adventures - A Tribute to Ruth Park - Ep 3
One morning Wombat woke up to find himself on the floor. He looked around. Everything looked normal. Big Bush was still very quiet and he could hear Tabby snoring softly in the room next door. Wombat is a small, furry, brown animal with a leathery nose like a koala's and a tiny tail like a big lump on the great hill which is his body. He has little shiny starlike eyes and white teeth like blocks of concrete.
Wombat got up and looked at what was on his bed. It wasn't his real bed. His real bed had been buried in the huge mess Wombat had left on the floor six months ago and now he found himself lying on the only patch of floor that could be seen and there on his bed he could see a little yellow bird with an orange head and a red beak - a parrot!
The parrot hopped up and said,'Are you my mother?' in a sad sort of voice. Wombat waited for his head to stop buzzing. All at once it did and he said, 'I'm Uncy Wombat and I'm going to take you to your sister mouse.' So the bird hobbled off after Wombat who shambled along on short, kneeless legs. Mouse was a small, silky grey mouse with pink ears and a pink beaky nose. It was sitting on a ball of wool, knitting Tabby a green sock.
'Mouse, Mouse,' cried Wombat, 'Look what I found!'
Mouse looked up from the sock and saw the bird. It jumped up with a squeak and ran to Wombat and exclaimed, 'Oh the poor, poor thing. Where did you find him, Wombat dear? And where does he come from?'
'I found him on my bed,' muttered Wombat.
Mouse turned to the bird. 'Where do you come from?' asked Mouse.
'I don't know,' sobbed the bird sadly, 'I just woke up here and I want my Mum!' The bird was crying now. Mouse and Wombat were very worried.
Without warning, Tabby came in. He was very surprised to see the bird. 'Mouse, what is this thing?' said Tabby, 'Mouse, what is this creature doing in our house? I don't like it.' Tabby glared at the bird and the bird glared at Tabby. Just in time there was a knock at the door. Mouse opened the door and standing there was a big yellow bird with an orange head and a red beak. 'Sorry to bother you,' said the big bird, ' but have you seen a little orange and yellow bird? His name is Peachy.'
The bird looked very distressed so Mouse quickly said, 'Yes, we have. Is this Peachy?' and out came the bird.
'Peachy,' cried the bird loudly, running towards him.
'Mummy, cried Peachy happily and they hopped off.
