Title: SANTA THE WAYFARER

I was driving to the orphanage with the few toys I had received from friends and relatives. There were games, some hand-me-downs three times over, and some used bats and balls and gloves. But they wouldn't be enough for 150 kids. Maybe the thought would count.

Then there was the Christmas meal they were expecting me to supply. I barely had enough for a couple small families. Could it stretch? Maybe if it were five loaves and two fish in Jesus' hands.

It was practically dawn when I came upon an old man dressed up like Santa. I figured he had been to a Christmas party and his car must have got stuck somewhere.

I lowered the passenger side window and leaned over to ask, 'Need a lift?'

The man trotted over to the car, opened the back door, tossed in two velvet bags onto the seat, and got in beside me. We drove on to the orphanage.

I tried to make small talk, but the man just stared at me or out the window. I thought for sure he would at least tell me why he was out in the middle of nowhere.

Things changed dramatically when we reached the orphanage. The man played the part of Santa to the hilt. The children hugged and kissed the white bearded man and made their requests.

That's when the miracles began. Every time a child would ask for something, the man would reach into one of the bags and pull out what was requested. After all the children received their toys, the man pulled out hams, turkeys, geese, yams, pumpkin pies, everything you could wish to eat and drink at a Christmas banquet. There was enough food left over for a week or leftovers.

I thanked the man as did the staff of the orphanage and the children. When I offered to drive him to where he needed to go, he excused himself and headed for the rest room.

I must have waited half an hour for the man to come out. When he didn't appear, I walked into the lavatory, but he was gone. I did find a note written in Old English script it read: I'M HAPPY I COULD BRING CHEER INTO THEIR LIVES IF ONLY FOR ONE DAY. NEXT YEAR I'LL MAKE MY DELIVERY AT THE EXPECTED TIME....SANTA CLAUS.
