Title: I Hereby Declare, on Oath
I Hereby Declare, on Oath…
The streets of New York City were crawling with immigrants seeking citizenship at the New York City council today. People from over 37 cultures traveled on trains, cabs, or trolleys. Anything these immigrants could get their hands to use, used it including the least inexpensive transportation, your feet. An Indian man walking to the council said, “This is a very important day.” Other immigrants from New York City said the exact same thing. All because today was the day that people could be official Americans. “It means so much to me to be an American. This has been my long lost fantasy ever since I was old enough to leave Germany. I just hope that this choice is the best choice for me,” said a German woman in her mid 20s.
At the New York City council front doors, people were in line for hours just to get the four sheets to do the application and test to be a true American. From my view inside, it looked like people were already becoming Americans because people sat with different nationalities when filling out the application. For example, there was not a big group of Irish people sitting altogether. But at the same time people came professional looking to be an American. After everyone took the test, filled out the application, and passed the test the judge walked in. At that same moment, the “wannabe Americans” got off their chairs or just stood standing there facing the judge attentively. It almost seemed like no one even blinked or moved a muscle. “Everyone in this room are very important people today,” said the judge dressed in black, “because you are becoming true Americans. Now repeat after me. I hereby declare, on oath…” “I hereby declare, on oath…” said the crowd that almost looked like a blanket of heads repeated. “Now shake hands with people you do not know and say congratulations for becoming An American,” uttered the happy judge. Then everyone in the building including myself got this warm feeling inside that you are now part of America. People started to cheer as loud as they could since this is a very very important day.
