'I can't wait to get my hands around your scrawny neck, Potter,' Malfoy whispered, his crystalline breath clouding on the dusty window of the small train. His ghostly pale hands clenched into fists, and he nudged the faded gray flannel that cushioned the circular seat he sat on. He had been expelled from Hogwarts only a few hours before, when Professor McGonagall had caught him sneaking out of bed in the Slytherin boy's dormitory to try and kill Harry in the shadowy mystery of that wintry night. She'd known that he was attempting to kill him, because that's what he had been muttering under his breath. And of course, when he bumped into her, she heard his words. He would never forget the expression on her face when she knew what he was trying to do. Wicked person though he was - and deeply proud of it - even he felt a small pang of guilt somewhere in the middle of his stomach. He'd never felt anything like it before, so it seemed oddly foreign to him.
Yet, he could have sworn on the conversation he'd overheard about a year ago. The whole school had been exiting the Great Hall, after lunch had been eaten and the great tables had been magically cleared, when he'd manage to slip over to the Gryffindor table, where that stupid Potter, worthless Weasley, and pitiful - not that he felt any pity for her - Mudblood, Granger, had been hunched over in their chairs next to each other, whispering. He hadn't been able to hear the whole conversation, of course, but Potter had said something about a certain object called - what was it again? oh, yes - the Mirror of Erised. Malfoy had never heard of or seen it before, but it had a nice ring to it, that was for sure. The Mirror of Erised...
