Title: Something Never To Be Regained: Part One
As I walked into the cave, I saw two beady eyes looking at me. Unblinking, swathed in velvety-black darkness, they glittered red-gold, seeming to swim in the midst of all this inky black that swirled around me, that had engulfed me as soon as I had entered. I had found the cave situated near the top of a grassy rock-scattered ledge, strewn with fallen trees that I had to climb over, unable to avoid being scratched by their sharp-edged branches as I struggled to gain a grip on the smooth bark. My curiosity aroused, I walked further into the darkness, and heard a loud crash behind me. I whipped around immediately, and saw that a small avalance had occurred--the gray-black rocks that had previously laid on top of the cave's rough stone ceiling had fallen somehow when I walked forward, and now blocked the opening, and since only thin knives of shining gold crept through the cracks in the boulders, I could hardly see what was in front of me. Upon closer inspection of the eyes, I discovered to my mild surprise and smattering of shock that they were not eyes after all...
