Then my mum strolled off and Emma and me went into Woolworth’s. We looked round for a bit and then Emma saw this writing set that she really, really liked. Inside there were some envelopes, some cards some writing paper and an ink pen. It was all printed with pictures of baby tigers. The box also had a picture of a baby tiger on it. Now, Emma loved tigers, especially baby one’s and she said to me,
“Louise look. Isn’t it sweet? Its really good quality to.”
“Ahhh!” I replied.
“I must have it, how much?”
“Ummm…”
I looked at the price tag. It was £6.99. More than Emma had. She had said she only had £5.00.
“Oh,” she said, “That’s just my luck!”
I laughed typically then I suggested, “why don’t you ask for it for Christmas?”
“Yea, but I need it now really, because I can write all my cards can’t I,” she disagreed, “Have you got £2.00 I can borrow, I’ll pay you back, I promise.”
“I sorry but I haven’t!”
I would have loved to lend her some money but I just didn’t have any. You see my dad left my mum and me when I was only six and my mum’s wages were really low. We just about had enough money to buy our food!
We carried on looking round for a little bit, and then when we were going out we walked down the isle where Emma saw the set and her faced changed. I was quite surprise actually though because it didn’t change to a sad sort of face It changed into a mischievous, cunning one. I just carried on walking and I turned round to talk to Emma and she wasn’t there so I walked back up to where I knew where she would be and peeped round the corner of the isle. I couldn’t believe my eyes! Emma picked up the set and slid it under her big puffer jacket. I stood there for a second then,
“Louise.” It sounded as if she was surprised to see me.
“I tried to forget, “Come on,” I said, “Emma?” I then started. I don’t know how it slipped out it just did!
“Yea,” she said, “what?”
“Um, nothing, don’t worry.” I tried to bottle it up. I couldn’t believe she would go this far. She wasn’t spoilt. I don’t think she knows what she was doing.
The closer to the door we got, the more nervous I got. We were right next to the door now and all of sudden although I was expecting it, the noise of the alarms made me jump out of my skin.
