Title: Great Golden Hair: Chapter One

''How is she?'' asked the girl's mother nervously as she entered the room.
''Hush now, Brenda,'' her husband replied quietly, with a finger to his lips. Brenda, for that was the girl's mother's name, fell silent at once, for all women in those days were obliged (or perhaps not) to submit to their husband's will, who was assumed to be the greater one, far superior to his wife. Mark, for that was her husband's name, happened to be one of the doctors working there, at the hospital. ''She's asleep, and thankfully she's peaceful now.''
''Thank goodness the fever has left her!'' Brenda cried gratefully. ''I feared that she wouldn't make it alive!''
''Do not raise your hopes too high,'' Mark warned her gravely. ''If she ever does wake, she will be changed forever - not the innocent, carefree child that she used to be. Some great power is at work inside of her, this I know, but I don't know what this power is, nor the extent of its strength. It could be eating away the child's soul, and I can't sense it.''
Brenda turned pale. ''Is there anything we could do to save her?'' she asked frantically, feeling icy fear clutch her heart.
''I don't know'' came the reply. ''All I know is that the fever is gone, though some minor symptoms may remain.''
There was silence. Then, ''Tell me more about this power,'' Brenda said.
''I can't. I researched the latest volumes in the newest and best libraries in the world, but it said nothing of what affects Sarah.''
''Is it a sickness, a disease, that could be easily cured?'' Brenda probed further, hungry for more information.
Mark shook his head sadly. ''I'm afraid that it isn't. I'm afraid that it might be...'
