Title: Full moon day
i was born in Australia, but am of Korean background. And being of Korean background means celebrating the celebrations of Korea. Like jong-wol deborem, the day of the first full moon of the year. in Australia, it isn't often that we celebrate this day like in Korea, but we do study it in Korean School.
jong-wol deborem is celebrated of the 15th of January, according to the lunar calendar. Many events are held to celebrate this day, including one rather strange one- namely, dowi palgi, or in English, it literally means 'selling your heat'.
The people who first wake on this day greet people differently than they usually do. Instead of saying hello, they say 'buy my heat' Although this sounds strange, it is actually believed that if they do this they won't be as hot during Summer.
Also, Koreans often drink a type of alchohol on this day, even children, but of course they only have a tiny sip, which allows us to hear better. It is believed that after they drink this alchohol, they will only hear the good sounds and nothing of the bad.
people also make wishes on the day of the full moon. one way of wishing is called 'boorum' which is when they crack any fruit or nut with a hard shell like peanuts and chesnuts and while doing so, make a wish. They also eat rice made with five types of grains, and types of traditional side-dishes.
but the evnts of the day are ironically held at night. The first is dalmaji, or the welcoming of the new moon. The people of the country gather in the highest spot near the village and make a wish. The farmers wish for a good harvest, the single ask for marriage and those who have dereams ever close to their hearts wish for them to come true. During dalmaji, Koreans often sing, dance and afterwards, hold a bit of a festival of traditional Korean music. When dalmaji is finished, the people have a tug of war contest. The loser of this contest sometimes has to give some food the winner, but no regret lies amongst the people.
The children also play they part. They usually go to the rice and vegetable fields and make a burning torch and wave it around in circles to scare evil spirits away. Then they throw the torch into the field to kill any bugs.
Jongwol deborum is full of events and is always extremely enjoyable for everyone
