Title: Jewels
As the rays of the sun crept through the house, I stood in the living room, looking around. Not a speck of my gems missing. I breathed a sigh of relief. My mother worried too much about my Saphirres, diamonds, rubys, opals, and emralds.
Tammi was sleeping in the corner. Sweet Tammi. Always on the lookout, even though she was a cat, for my jewels. Her fur was soft and silky as velvet, and sometimes it looked like golden flames when sunlight touched it. Tammi, sensing my arrival, stood up and yawned.
"Hey, Tammi, your up early." I whispered softly, walking towards her and scratching her ears. "Purrrr" She responded, happy to see me.
I walked to my Saphirre Case and studied the jewels. Which should I wear? I wondered. The heart shape? The cut one? Or a necklace? Tammi looked around, then walked to the kitchen.
I picked up my heart necklace and held it to my neck, looking in a mirror. "Perfect," I said, and I put it on. My housemate was still asleep. Her name was Jessica, and she was just as weary of the jewels as my mother. I would laugh every time she pointed out that they could very well be stolen. "Oh, Jessica! Calm down, my jewels are fine. Not a soul would dare break into my mansion."
I knew in my heart that it was, of course, possible. I would stare every day out my window, wondering who was possibly looking at my front door, waiting for the perfect moment to crash in and steal what they could grab before they were caught. My brother, Chris, would cock his head and smile confidently. "Shannon," He would say, "Don't worry. I won't let those jewels be TOUCHED by anyone else except those who live here." His words would soothe my worried soul.
One night, I feel asleep early, in the chair in the living room. Tammi crawled onto my lap, glaring at the front door as if maybe, just maybe, she should run out and nip at anyone who touched my driveway. I was confident. My Tiger, Lili, had a tendecy to wear off intruders.
I woke up the next morning. The rays of the sun would creep in my living room in about five minutes. Five minutes later, Tammi would be awaken. And this story would start all over again.
