Title: Tears have no color

I watched my best friend get whipped
I saw her screaming inside, only inside
She was smiling on the outside
How strange
How was she able to smile?
With so much pain being brought to her
Why? Why? WHY?

She was watching me the entire time
I saw her crisp black skin
Open wider and wider

When my father was finished with her
she fell to her knees
The dust around her flew up
It was the most pitiful sight!

I ran to her as fast as I could
She had no smile,
just her scared black face
No expression could be found

She turned to me and asked
How? How could you watch me the entire time?
I opened my mouth, nothing came out
How was I able to stand there and watch her the entire time?
“Tears have no color”, she said

I picked her limp and lifeless body up
Ever so gently
I brought her to my house
My mother told me
“Slaves aren’t worth my time or medicine”

My best friend died in my arms that night
Guilt overwhelmed my body
“I KILLED HER!” I screamed
In a way I did
How couldn’t everyone see,
Tears have no color
