A kitten at my door…
“Mommy, I’m feeling sick,” I whispered under my throat; I wanted intently to stay home from school. “Deenie, do you feel okay?” “How can I be okay when I tell you I’m sick?” I realized that I had spoken in my normal voice… “I feel as if I have to stay home from school,” whispered I under my throat again. “Aw, okay.”
I had a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast. For lunch I had some macaroni and cheese.
Later in the evening when I sat reading ‘ One small dog’ I heard a meow @ my door. Maybe it was Ramona Quimby’s cat…well, no! A stray cat! I looked down at the tiny creature staring at me with cold blue eyes. I thought a minute and picked the poor creature up.
“But mommy, how would you like to be strayed in that chilly cold wind?”
“But Deenie picking up a stray cat is nasty…did you wash your hands?”
I looked at my hands and at the cat. She had been staring at me with her cold blue eyes until this instant. She cocked her eyes away from me and meowed away.
Two days later mommy said that she had been too selfish for that poor kitten. She said I could keep it. And this is what I named the kitten- Coldy.
Coldy became our family member…though I had to keep her away from Dad…he’s allergic to cats.
After two years when I went to feed Coldy I found –guess how many- not five or six…ten kittens in the basket…
And I’ll never know when Coldy will become a grandmother’s grandmother’s grandmother! And that’s how the world of kittens and cats will grow.
