Title: Marianne's Garden
After many years, Marianne had finally discovered the perfect place for a garden. She gathered her belongings from her little brick house and set off to this place she would soon call home. She had discovered this place on a special trip across the ocean with her best friend Rose. The trip had cost her much of her money. She even had to sell her mother's golden lamp to go on the special trip.
When she saw the special place she knew was perfect for a garden, she vowed she would return someday and grow a garden. She would set up a business where people traveling the trail (a big park was nearby this place, so there was trails everywhere) near it could stop for a beverage, and some nice ripe vegetables and fruits. She would take the money from these sales and go into the city and buy herself really nice clothes and other things she couldn't grow or make herself. There was already a nice brick cottage standing there near the site that had not been used for 7 years, so it needed a little fixing up. Marianne would certainly love this place.
Marianne picked up her two big, brown suitcases, and went and waited outside her house. A few minutes later, Rose and her husband Frederick pulled up in their dirty old Chevy. Marianne hopped in, and they were on their way. No one said a word until they got to the seaport. This was going to be quite a journey.
"You will visit me," said Marianne.
"If we can afford it," said Rose rubbing her belly, which was as big as a pumpkin.
"The baby's coming soon you know," said Frederick.
"Yes, and to think I may never see the child," replied Marianne softly.
"You will see the little one, we will make sure you do," said Rose.
"You better! You know I love their tiny little faces, so delicate and so lovable. I would love to have one of my own," replied Marianne. "
You'll have one of your own someday, Marianne," said Frederick.
"I suppose so, Frederick," replied Marianne.
"Well, Marianne, this is goodbye. Your ship is about to leave. I will pray for you. I will send you letters, and pictures of the youngster," said Rose with tears streaming down her face, leaving a puddle on the ground as big as the ocean.
Marianne hugged Frederick and Rose, then, she rubbed Rose's belly and whispered "Be a good child, sweet wildflower."
And, Marianne stepped aboard, about to embark on a journey she would never forget.
An old woman approached Marianne, seeing her worried face, not exactly sure where to go. "Salut, I am Isabella LaCour. You look like you need some help, let me show you to your room," said the old French woman.
"No wonder I paid so much! So, what do you do here on the 'Pearl'? " said Marianne.
"I work here, I clean the dining room after everyone has finished. I also wash people's clothing if requested," replied Isabella.
"Oh, I see. Well, here is my ticket. It has some kind of number on it, I suppose that's my room number," said Marianne.
"Oh, oui, oui, it is! Here, let me show you to your room," replied Isabella.
Isabella showed Marianne to a pretty little room covered with green. The wallpaper was green with white stripes, the carpet was a deep jungle green, the lamp was green and gold, and the bed had a humongous light green blanket on it and metallic green sheets, the pillows were green like a dollar bill, and there was a little armchair that was your basic green, with a few pink flowers and yellow bows. There was also the bathroom, which was pure red and gold, red wallpaper with little gold suns, a shower with a red shower curtain, a red toilet with a gold toilet seat, a red sink with gold faucet-handle things, and a mirror out-lined in gold.
Marianne had never seen such fancy things in her life, then she noticed what Isabella was wearing.
"An old maid in a gold dancer's dress!" she thought. Isabella had noticed Marianne looking over her outfit.
"Sweetie, I'm substituting for one of the young girls tonight, I've been showing off this dress all day! It's so fun!" said Isabella.
"Ya know, I was a dancer back in my day, I really showed the audience a good time. I'm glad I'm gonna get to work with one of those young guys tonight in the dance number. I met my husband doing one of those dance numbers many years ago. Those days were fine, but these are the days! Well, I gotta go, honey, bye!" Isabella left the room.
Marianne put down her bags, and shut the door. She collapsed onto the bed, and smiled at what a beauteous home she would have for the next week or so. Then, she felt something move. Oh, my! The ship is already leaving! Marianne said out-loud. She peered out the porthole and saw Rose and Frederick weeping by the docks. She waved, and somehow, Rose saw her, she waved back, and Frederick gave Marianne his special little wink he always did.
Things were going to be different on the ship, Isabella told Marianne later. Marianne walked all around the ship. There were 2 shops, one for clothing and accessories, and another for soft drinks, and thread, and make-up. Let's just say your basic clothing shop, and a drug store.
Marianne continued to walk, then she saw a big sign and a big glass door in front of her. The sign read, with bright lights surrounding it: BALLROOM Time for dancing! Oh, hooray, oh, hurrah! I just love dancing! thought Marianne to herself. The only thing was, who would Marianne dance with? She didn't know, but she went into the ballroom anyway. A young man walked up to her. Hello, Miss. May I have this dance? he said. Marianne thought for a moment, then, she said Of course! As they danced, they talked.
My name is Edward Stuart. You may call me Eddie, all my friends do, the young man said. Well, my name is Marianne. Marianne Jones. I'm delighted to have met you, Edward, I mean, um, uh, Eddie, replied Marianne. If you would like to call me Edward, that would be fine, anything is all right with me, Marianne, said Edward. And Marianne and Edward danced the afternoon away, then it was time for dinner.
Edward and Marianne sat together at dinner. They chatted about their lives, and remarked on how stupidly sensible the captain of the ship tried to make himself look. Marianne went up to the buffet and got a big plate of roast beef and potatoes. Edward got the same. For dessert, Marianne had a big slice of apple pie, and Edward had a raspberry tart.
Later, Marianne and Edward went to the ballroom to dance, of course!!!! They danced in the crowded ballroom full of couples for many hours. Soon, it was time to go. Well, Marianne, it's been a fantastic night. I'll see you tomorrow? said Edward. Yes, you'll definitely see me tomorrow. Thank you for a splendid evening, replied Marianne. Then, Edward went left towards his room, and Marianne went straight toward her room.
Marianne took the key to her room Isabella had given her, and opened the door to her room. She looked out her window at the beautiful ocean. She saw a big whale leaping through the water. "How pretty that whale is," she thought. "I wish I had a camera to take a picture!" Oh, but Marianne was very poor! She was thought to be a cheap, good-for-nothing little bag lady to most of the people she knew. Except, Rose and Frederick who loved and cherished Marianne' s curious and lost character. She wanted to know where everything was and how it worked, just like a tiny child.
Marianne changed into her nightgown and thought about how much she would enjoy her new life in a faraway land and prayed Edward would knock upon her door and ask for a good night kiss. Somehow, God answered her prayer. A knock came at the door, and Marianne hopped up from her bed, and gallantly danced to the door hoping for the something special she had prayed for. She opened the door softly and slowly.
Then she saw Edward' s gleaming eyes before her, and smiled with deep joy filling her heart, which was about to pop. "Marianne, I am sorry to be so impolite, but I can' t help but wonder if you would like a good night kiss," said Edward before her, his hazel eyes staring deep into Marianne' s.
Marianne almost felt like she could fall dead into Edward' s strong, but non-muscular arms. "Oh, yes, a good night kiss would be splendid, but I feel so awkward being with you looking like an old maid!" replied Marianne.
"Don' t feel that way, Marianne. There is no need, you look absolutely beautiful!" cried Edward, holding Marianne' s hand. Then, suddenly, Edward stepped forward and moved his handsome face toward Marianne' s, then, he kissed her soft, red, painted lips. Marianne sweetly admired his elegant charm, but yet enjoyed his foolish humor even more. Edward swiftly left the room, waving to Marianne, as Marianne just stared into darkness, a darkness filled with peace and love.
