Title: Respect
Respect
As Officer Daniels patrolled the quiet halls of De Lahoya High School, he stooped to pick up a piece of paper from the floor. After looking over the paper and seeing no name, he let out a small sigh and threw it in the trash. Classes were about to let out so he got ready to direct traffic through the halls as kids ran to the buses. Then the bell rang and kids filed out of the classrooms. Officer Daniels began to shout directions over the slamming of lockers in a vague attempt to decongest the hallway. Then he heard someone calling his name and when he turned to look who it was he saw Sarah Williams waving him over from her locker.
As he began to trot over she called out, "It’s Jammed."
"He must have the easiest job in the world," proclaimed Ted staring across the hall at Officer Daniels.
"Yeah," replied John, " unjamming lockers and walking around school all day."
"It’s not like he’s a real cop," Ted added with disgust. "Well I gotta go," He moaned, hoisting his heavy backpack over his shoulder.
"Alright, see ya," mumbled John as he bent back down to his locker to retrieve his books.
As Officer Daniels strolled away, Sarah called happily from her locker, "Thank you." After all the students had seemed to leave, Officer Daniels proceed to his car, so he could go home and get some sleep.
With his humongous backpack on his back Ted trudged down the parking lot to his mom’s car when his book leaped out of his backpack and hit the ground with a thud. He hadn’t been able to zip it up completely and the hole had gotten larger. Ted let out a moan as he bent to pick up the book and put it back when he felt a hand on his shoulder. Then as he stared into the faces of Josh and his friends he felt that felling of dread well up in his stomach.
"Give me my money," commanded Josh. Ted tried to run but the stiffness in his joints was like an old man’s. He couldn’t move, so he decided maybe he could talk his way out of it.
Then in a small squeaky voice, which he hadn’t even recognized, he replied,"Josh you know I don’t owe you any money. Please just leave me alone." Josh has been getting money from everyone since the beginning of the year.
"You owe me money, and I’m going to get it even if I have to beat it out of you," Josh screamed as he pushed him. Ted tumbled towards the school’s brick wall.
As Officer Daniels yawned and leaned into his car he saw several kids surrounding a boy.
"All we want is twenty dollars. Everybody else paid. Don’t be stupid," Proclaimed Josh in a soft voice trying to win over Ted.
"Everything alright ?" asked Officer Daniels as he strolled towards the boys.
"Yeah, yeah," stuttered Josh as he quickly turned to leave, " we were just saying hi to Ted."
"Th-thanks," uttered Ted as he started to pick himself back up.
"No problem," said Officer Daniels, "and remember if you ever need any help just tell me. Thats what I’m here for." Ted continued to clumsily clammer to his mom’s car with a bit more respect and gratitude for Officer Daniels.
