Title: Pearl of Zoaras

20 YEARS LATER

Chapter 1

Two dark figures mounted upon two wild horses were riding toward Ancarta Castle. The castle was still and quiet, unaware of the unexpected visitors. The sound of the galloping horses was heart pounding but stimulating. The two figures continued toward the castle, faster, getting closer, and closer, and closer…

A joyful laugh broke the stony silence. Princess Corlette and her friend Linda, perched on two strong and sturdy horses, were riding around the grassy fields before Ancarta Castle. Corlette dismounted and handed the reigns to Linda.
"That was so much fun! I’ll come back tomorrow! Take care!" the young princess yelled to her friend, and strode toward the castle. She gazed up at the looming towers. She pounded on the gate of the castle. She leaned on the wall made of ashlar. The cold stone was comforting. A guard appeared, and cried, "Halt! Who’s there?"
Princess Corlette’s laugh rang out so loudly, Queen Anne heard it. Excitedly, she dropped her gardening shears and ran to the front entrance gate. Seeing the guard clumsily readying his sword, she sneaked up behind him, and casually asked, "Aren’t you going to let my daughter in?"
The guard, in his surprise dropped his sword. Without bothering to retrieve it, he manually pulled open the heavy iron gates, and the princess strolled in ignoring the guard completely. When she caught sight of her mother, she squealed and leapt into her outstretched arms. They walked hand in hand into the castle.
As they were crossing the wooden bridge between the parapet and castle, Corlette examined the water in the moat. The water was crystal clear. There were small little fish in there that had swum in from the ocean. As they approached the tall iron entrance door, one little fish jumped into the air. Corlette was greatly amazed as all the little fishes started to jump out of the moat, and dived back into the water again.
The door opened, Princess Corlette and the queen stepped in. They entered the spacious courtyard. Queen Anne’s garden was looking spectacular. There were lengthy trees covered with light green leaves. A little bird appeared from the foliage of one of the trees. It hopped onto the finger held out to it. Queen Anne gently stroked the soft feathers of the little sparrow. She threw it into the air and the sparrow spread his wings and soared away.
The beautiful red and white roses bloomed majestically, coiled around two marble columns, the entrance to the garden. There was no gate to the garden. Uncountable different colored pansies were growing around the bottom of some maple trees. Tulips blossomed in the many flowerbeds of the garden. There were many other pretty flowers in Anne’s garden. The different scents of the flowers filled Corlette’s nose. The queen returned to her weeding. Corlette stared up at the vast blue sky and sighed contentedly. She walked along the stone path that snaked through the garden.
The princess pushed the door of her room open slightly. After checking that the maids had gone for their afternoon break, she leapt into the room and shut the door swiftly. She ran over to her jeweled hand mirror and checked her hair. The long braid was falling apart and her dress was wrinkled and there were some dirty spots all over it.
"My, my, you look absolutely filthy!" a voice cried from behind her. Mariel, Corlette’s maid, strode up to her and shooed her into the bathroom. Off went the soiled dress, the braid was untied, and Corlette found herself in the bath, the warm water pouring over her head. She washed herself quickly, and the nice warm bath calmed her down. When she stepped out of the bathtub, there was Mariel, ready with a fresh, clean skirt and frilly white blouse. Corlette dried herself and slipped into the clothes. As Mariel dried her long, auburn hair, Corlette chose a light blue and ribbon for her braid. After her hair was dry enough, Mariel took the ribbon. She braided the long hair slowly, making sure there were no loose hairs floating around. She linked the ribbon to one of the three bunches of hair so when the braid was done, the ribbon would be wound around the braid. Mariel finished off with a beautiful bow tied at the end of the braid.
Finally free, Corlette hopped to her feet and before Mariel knew it, the young Princess was gone.
