Title: Pearl of Zoaras
Chapter 3
"There is a rose in Spanish Harlem. A red rose up in Spanish Harlem. With eyes as black as coal, that looked down in my soul and started fire there and then I lost control and something hmm, hmm. I am going to pick that rose and hmmm, hmmm, in my garrrrdeennnn!" sang Christine, Linda’s younger sister. She squealed when she sighted Corlette and ran to her. Corlette and Christine slapped palms.
Crack! Corlette spun around and stood in a ready stance.
Before her was Linda, clad in a blue tunic that had an illustration of a farm and underneath it spelled: Amighalre Farm. There was a whip in her right hand. Linda unexpectedly announced, "Can I come to your house, er, castle?"
Corlette nodded and they both raced to the large stable to harness the horses. Linda, very much ahead of her friend, did hops and skips, quite upsetting her neatly combed blonde hair. The navy blue clips lay abandoned on the ground, and Corlette stooped to pick them up on her way. When Corlette had arrived at the stable, Linda was already perched on Periwinkle, her horse. Corlette led Velocity out of the stable and attached the reigns to the rest of the equipment already set in place. She climbed onto the tall horse, and snapped the reigns. Velocity neighed loudly with delight and raced toward the vast, free fields of Fairfield. Linda, a little upset, cracked her whip and Periwinkle reared, then sped off after Velocity.
Linda watched the strong, powerful legs of Velocity striding swiftly ahead of Periwinkle. She cracked her whip once, twice, determined to pass Velocity. But she was no match to the energetic horse. After being cooped up for a couple of days, all the energy that had been building up inside him was released. Corlette watched Linda cracking her whip and poor Periwinkle slowed down.
Slowly the parapet of the castle emerged from behind one of the short hills. Velocity raged on. Soon they were right before the main gate. Corlette grasped for the reigns and pulled hard. Velocity obediently dropped to a trot and before long he stopped. Corlette dismounted and walked Velocity through the gates that had been opened by the guard. She left him in the yard surrounding the moat. Corlette heard a galloping of hooves and when she whirled around, Linda was there. She was heavy with sweat and her hair was a mess. She kept gasping for breath. Corlette joined her and helped her walk into the castle. In the garden, they sat down on one of the wooden swing benches. Linda viewed all of the flowers, plants, and trees in the queen’s garden. Getting off the swing, she sat beside a bed of blue pansies, still trying to catch her breath. The princess put an arm around her friend’s shoulder and they gazed at the many flowers in the garden. Linda set her hand down on the grass. Her fingers slipped
"Look, there’s some hole here," whispered Linda, and Corlette crawled over to the hole. They stared down at it, but Linda stuck her fingers inside again. She felt cool dirt and soil. A cold thing touched her finger. She grabbed it and pulled it out of the small hole. In her palm was a worn down key. It looked old and rusty, but there were patterns on it. "Wow, a key! What do you think it’s for?"
Linda turned to her friend and shrugged her shoulders, and handed the key to Corlette. The young princess pocketed it and helped Linda up. They stared at each other for a while, until one of the gardeners came along and Corlette had to get ready for supper. Linda curtsied Corlette and Corlette smiled back. She watched her best friend riding off into the distance on Velocity and Periwinkle behind them.
