Title: Pearl of Zoaras
Chapter 4
Corlette lay awake in her bed that night. She twisted and turned. The only thing she could think of was the mysterious key. She took it out of her pocket. Still lying in her bed, she held it up to the ceiling and gazed at it. She got up and pulled open the drawer in her bureau beside her bed. She retrieved a piece of thin leather. Taking the key, she strung the leather through the little hole at the top of the key. After tying the ends of the leather together, she slipped it over her head. Corlette lay down again and tucked herself in. In a few minutes, she was fast asleep.
The next morning, when breakfast was finished, Queen Anne noticed the key around Corlette’s neck. "What’s this?" she asked. Corlette held up the key for her mother to see.
"Linda and I were in your garden yesterday and she found this key. She let me keep it because it was on my property," explained Corlette. "Actually, your property."
The queen nodded. "You know, I don’t know if it is a coincidence, but about 20 years ago, after my wedding, I had a strange dream. I was in my garden, beside a bed of blue pansies. There was a strange little hole. And there was a key inside that shares a resemblance to this one."
Corlette gasped. "That’s exactly where Linda found it!" Corlette cried, unable to contain her excitement. Queen Anne shook her head in disbelief. They stood up together. Corlette sensed an adventure behind this mystery. The queen walked away, still pondering over the strange coincidence. Corlette raced to the garden. She raced to the pansy flowerbed. There was the small hole again, but it looked slightly bigger. She stuck her hand in. She went past all the dirt and soil until she reached the bottom. By then her whole hand had disappeared from view. Her fingertips hit metal. Corlette tried to grab it but it appeared to be too big. A passing gardener came by and Corlette asked him for a shovel. He searched his pockets and came up with a spade. The anxious princess gratefully accepted it. She began to dig. Pushing aside surrounding grass she dug the shovel into the soft dirt and began to shovel. Dirt flew all over her pink dress and beads of perspiration appeared on her forehead as she dug on
"It’s okay, we’ll open it together. If it’s treasure, we’ll split it evenly," he said soothingly, but Corlette screamed on until he reluctantly handed it back to her. She discontinued her racket and held her key in front of the box. The key was inserted and she turned the key. There was a soft click as the lid of the box popped open. Inside, there was a small, round pearl. In the sunlight it glistened. "Wow," she managed to mumble. Bryan looked over her shoulder. His eyes grew big. Clearly excited, the box was in his hands again. Corlette didn’t dare utter a sound. She watched as Bryan carefully removed the pearl from the box. He yelled with joy. Suddenly, he stopped his cheering.
Corlette watched in horror as a green tail with spikes appeared and scales were beginning to form on his body. Bryan let out a yelp rather a roar as he was transformed into a dragon. His clothes were torn and he flung them to the ground, and let out another roar. Fear was lit up his eyes, and for a moment, that was the only thing that was still human about him. Then they turned dark and glared at her. Corlette ran as fast as she could away from the beast that was her brother. Wings grew from the dragon’s back and when they were spread, it was a wingspan about 15 feet. The beast, flapping the powerful wings, was lifted into the air and flew towards Ancarta Forest. Tears trickled down Corlette’s face. Her brother had been turned into a dragon. What she had witnessed was too much for her. She flung herself to the ground and burst into tears, shaking with fright.
Arvin sniffed Corlette. The princess opened her eyes and found herself staring at the little beagle. She screamed and crawled away from the little pup. The beagle looked questionably at her, almost like he was saying, "Where’s Bryan?" The little dog sensed the fear in her and cautiously stepped toward her. Corlette didn’t move. The beagle ran toward her and snuggled under her hand and whimpered. Corlette sighed and petted the little dog. She wondered why she was ever afraid of such an adorable dog. We’ll find your master and free him, Corlette promised to Arvin. The dog, as though he understood her, nodded his head slightly. She got up and ambled into the castle.
