Title: Pearl of Zoaras

Chapter 5

"A dragon!!!" the King shouted loudly, and Corlette winced. Queen Anne sat sobbing, her whole body shaking. "But, father, I -," Corlette protested.
"And how precisely did this happen?" the furious king continued. Corlette explained to him what happened, always being interrupted by the king who kept butting in with questions. When she was done explaining, the queen hugged the frightened princess. She held out her hand and indicated him to stop. The king covered his face, and moaned. The queen led Corlette out into the garden for fresh air. Queen Anne didn’t say anything when she saw the mess of the grass by the blue pansies. Corlette spotted the box on the ground. Letting go of her mother’s hand, she picked up the box. The queen took the box from her daughter and inspected it.
"Very exquisite. See the pattern on the box? Just like the key. Look, there’s a painting in the bottom," Anne pointed at the picture of the animals. Corlette gazed at it with wonder. It might have been a trick of the eye, but the princess thought she saw the tiger blink. There was a gorilla, an elephant, two pandas, a polar bear, a lion, a lamb, a bunny, a toucan, and a parrot. The queen closed the box and handed it to her daughter. The pearl was lying on the ground. Either one of them did not wish to touch it. Queen Anne found an abandoned gardening glove on the stone path. She slipped it on and picked the pearl up. Nothing happened. Corlette opened the box and her mother dropped the pearl in. Corlette searched for the key but it was gone. The queen snapped her fingers and two gardeners appeared. Corlette watched her mother pointing to the pile of dirt and the hole. Queen Anne led her back inside the castle. Corlette hugged and kissed her mother, then fled to her room with the box.

That night at dinner, no one spoke. The only sound was the scraping of forks and knives on the plates. Finally, the king cleared his throat and announced, "Something must be done to help my son".
The queen was about to speak when one of the guards stumbled into the castle, gasping, "Dragon sighted, your Majesty…holding it off. Request permission to hire a knight."
"The dragon is out there!" King Peregrine stood up, knocking over the chair. The guard nodded and asked to hire a knight. The king refused, and the guard sped outside again, and just before he left, he said, "Then we’ll have to destroy it ourselves."

Bryan looked down at the guards. He loomed over them, casting a shadow over them. They fired arrows at him and flung spears. He flapped his wings and blew them all back. He breathed fire at them and roared. The shower of arrows continued. He felt a pain in his leg. There was a spear stuck in it. He moaned and pulled it out. Roaring, he retreated to the forest.
Princess Corlette watched everything from her bedroom window.
"RETREAT!" yelled the captain, and the archers retreated back to the castle, readying their bows and setting them in the arrow loop. Soldiers were posted on the walk-walk behind the battlement. Corlette drew the curtains. She couldn’t stand the suffering of her brother. She stood up. Determination flashed in her eyes. She took the box, and ran to the garden. She carefully took out the pearl and it rested perfectly in her palms. A strange feeling shot through her entire body. She closed her eyes. The scales and tail appeared and the wings grew. When Corlette opened her eyes, she was looming over the garden. Testing the wings she flapped them, and felt herself being lifted up into the air. She flew to Ancarta Forest.
There were many animals there, including all the animals in the painting inside the box. A tiger brushed past her leg as she landed. An elephant was bathing in a pool. Soon enough, she spotted Bryan. He lay in a bed of foliage licking his wound. Corlette stepped toward him. He looked up, and whimpered. In her mind, she heard him say, Corlette?. She nodded. They could communicate through thought. A gorilla handed Bryan a cup made of a log. Bryan nodded at the gorilla and drank from the log. He handed it to Corlette and she gulped the concoction. It was sweet and tasted like fruit punch. The animals served them like royalty for the rest of the day, and Corlette was very contented. She had never known the forest was such an amazing place. She walked to the pond and looked at herself. Her dragon eyes were navy blue and they stared back at her. Dragon, the water seemed to say. Corlette closed her eyes and fell asleep.
