Title: Pearl of Zoaras

Chapter 6

Meanwhile, in the castle, everything was hectic.
"Where is my daughter?" the angry king was breaking down. First he lost his son, and now he had lost his daughter. He had every part of the castle searched. The queen was looking for her outside in the garden. She stepped into the garden cautiously, calling Corlette’s name every now and then. Anne noticed the area in front of the blue pansies was patched up. She walked along the stone path. The irises were in full bloom, daffodils spread their petals up to the sunshine, and the foxtail lilies were even taller than the queen was. As she was gazing at some daisies, she tripped and lay sprawled on the grass. There was a pain in her knee. She sat up and looked for the object that had tripped her. It was the box. The pearl was lying on the grass, shimmering against the sun. Then the queen knew. She limped back to the castle with the box.

Bryan got up. He lumbered out of the forest. Corlette opened her eyes. She stared at the foliage for a while and noticed that the leaves were shaking. She heard the thumping of heavy feet. Panic gripped in her chest.
She stood up and just in time caught sight of the swishing tail of Bryan. Must stop him, she said to herself. With all the swiftness she could manage, she grasped the swinging tail and pulled. Corlette was stunned by the strength she possessed. Bryan grumbled. I must go to Mom, he said to her. No, you’ll be killed, Corlette pleaded. Bryan continued, dragging Corlette with him.
Anne looked into the box. The animals were all moving like they were alive. The painting in the box was like a camcorder. It followed the animals as they followed two dragons. The queen sighed, relieved. The two dragons were heading out of the forest. The queen’s heart pounded wildly. She raced to the walk-walk.

Linda’s father ran back to the farm as soon as possible. The bag in his hand swayed back and forth. Linda and Christine were in the house playing with their dolls. Their father burst into the room, looking very excited.
"I’ve just been to Ancarta Village. Everyone was terribly excited and running around dramatically. There are rumors that there are dragons around Ancarta Field. One crazy old lady said the dragons are actually the prince and princess of Fairfield. I told her she was insane," the farmer exclaimed. Linda was in disbelief. Surely her friend wasn’t a dragon. But she had always, for some reason, believed old women. They seemed wiser. She headed to the stable, ignoring the cries of her father and sister.

Bryan marched on. Corlette let go of the long tail and reluctantly followed her brother. Foliage dropped to the ground and trees shook as they pass.

Soldiers were lined along the walk-walk, ready with swords and spears. The archers drew their bows and peeped through the meurtriere. They waited.

A horse was heading toward the castle. Bryan brushed aside the branches of the last tree. He had mistaken Linda for a knight. I will deal with this brave knave, he vowed. Corlette heard his thoughts and looked over his shoulder. "Linda!" she tried to shout, but the only sound she made was a deafening roar. Bryan blew fire at the small girl on the horse.
Linda pulled the reigns to the right, trying to dodge the flame. Inside she felt almost against trying to save her friend’s brother. Velocity swerved to the right and neighed. She watched as the dragon behind the one that had blown fire at her grabbed the tail of him, and swung him to the side. The dragon behind the fire breathing one was Corlette. Corlette screeched at Bryan, You tried to hurt her! You’re a monster! Corlette lumbered towards Linda into the open field. That’s when the soldiers caught sight of her.
"Aim and fire at will, men!" the captain cried, and the soldier opened fire. Corlette nervously tried to avoid the arrows. A spear whizzed past her ear. Bryan trudged out of the safety of the forest and blocked Corlette, taking in a few arrows. Corlette cried aloud for her brother. Go! Mom knows what to do! Dive into ocean and find the secret entrance to the moat! Bryan bellowed, and Corlette fled with Linda close behind her. She heard the cries of her brother. Her life was shattering. Corlette dove into the water and searched for a hole. Her clawed foot got caught in an immense opening in the ground. She barely fit inside. Her mighty wings served well as fins. Water rushed past her. There was a tint of red in her dark blue eyes. The underwater tunnel lead to a large pool. She swam to the surface and gasped for breath. Panting, her eyes flew around her surroundings. It looked like she was inside a colossal igloo. The walls were blocks of ice. Candles were lit with blue flames. It was c
"Whoo ah youm?" a voice sounded around the room. Corlette looked around. No one was to be seen. "Upp herem!" the shrill voice sounded again. Corlette looked up. There was a strange little child up on a ledge attached to the wall. The ledge was very high up. The child’s skin color was blue. He–or she had sky blue eyes. It did not seem to wear any sort of clothing. The child’s feet were webbed like a ducks. "Whoo ah youm?" the child asked again. Corlette spoke in a calm, reassuring voice, "I am Corlette, the Princess of Ancarta." The child smiled and said, "I um TearDrop. Why youm dragom?"
Corlette explained to TearDrop that a pearl that was found in a box had transformed her. At the mention of the pearl, TearDrop gasped, "Youm found pearlm of Zoaras?" Corlette shook her head, indicating she did not understand.
"Pearlm of Zoaras is our sacred amulet. It was missingm and you’ve found it!" TearDrop explained. TearDrop told the Princess the only way to turn back to a human was to lock the pearl back into the box with the key and return it to the Zoaras (TearDrop is a Zoara). Corlette thanked TearDrop. The young Zoara led Corlette to the secret entrance to the moat of Castle Ancarta. Corlette crawled into the opening and waved to TearDrop.
