Title: Pearl of Zoaras

Chapter 7

Bryan was wounded badly. Linda tugged the reins of the excited horse to the left. She rode toward the castle. "Stop! Stop firing, you villains!" Linda yelled at the soldiers. An arrow whizzed over top of her head. She ducked her head as she approached closer. When she was right up to one of the archers, he sneered at her. Linda snapped her whip forward. It wound around the bow. She tugged hard and the bow flew out of the bewildered archer’s hands. He ran to the archer next to him and whispered in his ear. "I see we have a problem," the archer said through clenched teeth.
Meanwhile, Linda approached Bryan. "Go! Go back to the forest, or you’ll be killed!" Bryan was confused. Why was this girl trying to help him? Wasn’t she one of the castle’s troops? Linda could see that he was confused. "I am Corlette’s friend, trust me," she shouted at him. Unwillingly, he retreated back to the forest. Linda followed him. The animals were all on top of him. They washed his wounds and bandaged each carefully with foliage and bark strips.
The castle hadn’t suffered much damage. There were only a few wounded soldiers who had taken a bad burning. A few walls of the parapet were scorched, but the stone was strong. The king and queen stayed in the safety of the castle. The captain was discussing plans with the king. King Peregrine was having a hard time getting through to the captain that the dragons were his children.
All of a sudden, a maid ran to the queen screaming. "A dragon’s in your garden!" Queen Anne rose out of her seat and took the box with her. She strolled to the garden. The captain was crying, "Good Lord, a dragon in the courtyard!" King Peregrine knocked out the captain before he ran off to alert his troops.
Corlette greeted her mother with a wave of a wing. The box was tucked under the queen’s arm. Corlette crouched down and held the box in her big clawed paw. She asked for the key through the expression in her eyes. Queen Anne understood and pointed to her neck. Corlette looked down. The key was still around her neck. It had been there all the time. The leather had also grown with her body to fit her. The princess bent down and her mother fearlessly untied it from Corlette’s neck. The queen picked up the box from Corlette’s paw.
The captain had regained consciousness. He heard a sound coming from the garden. He slipped silently from the room and out into the courtyard.
The dragon was there in the garden with its back to him. The captain drew his sword and moved stealthily towards it. Once he was directly behind it, he raised his sword. Queen Anne turned the key, and there was a click. Corlette disappeared.
The captain brought down his sword, but found himself slicing air. He looked up and saw the king and queen glaring at him. He gave them a sheepish look and ran off.
"Where’s Corlette?" the king asked the queen. They looked at each other. Unexpectedly, there was a sound of a "swoosh" behind them and there lay Princess Corlette, human again and asleep soundly on the stone path.

In the forest, the animals were dancing around Bryan just before he turned back human. When Bryan got up, he felt light and small. The trees loomed over him like never before. He tried to roar but all he got was a hoarse human voice. The animals scurried off. He looked as his hands and breathed a sigh of relief. Bryan stood up and saw Linda watching him. For some reason, she looked very attractive to him.
Linda heard a snap of a twig behind her. Bryan didn’t seem to notice. The sound of the stretched bowstring was an instant warning for her to watch out. She waited for the twang of the released arrow. Twang! The arrow came hissing from behind. Linda lashed out with her whip. Crack! The whip’s rapidness and length stopped the arrow in its tracks just before it struck Bryan. He looked up. The soldier’s pattering of feet was heard as he ran from the forest. Linda snapped the arrow in half and flung it to the ground.

When the prince and princess had safely returned to the castle, there was a feast that lasted three days and four nights.
When the celebration was over, and the cooks got a week vacation, TearDrop took the box and thanked everyone for the dinner and including her in the festivities. She returned to her home in the Zoara Kingdom. Linda hugged her friend and went back to Amighalre Farm.
Princess Corlette never forgot her adventure because she took over her brother’s duty as recorder. The archive was redecorated and more lights were installed. When King Peregrine and Queen Anne had passed on, Bryan became King and his wife, Linda, became Queen. Corlette never married, because she never wished to, but became a Zoara instead, the first human Zoara, and lived with TearDrop.
And that takes us to the end of the story.
